Presentation of Research Briefs for Mainstreaming Climate Action into Nigeria’s Development Plan

Unlocking Nigeria's growth: Join us to integrate climate action into national development.

 Sep 24, 2024 - 10:00 - 12:00 (WAT) Event LocationPhysical — Wazobia Hall, Abuja Continental Hotel, Abuja
Background

Nigeria, as Africa's largest economy, faces the dual challenge of driving economic growth while addressing the escalating impacts of climate change. Despite notable progress, such as the submission of its updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the UNFCCC, the passage of the Climate Change Act, and the establishment of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), significant challenges remain in fully integrating climate action into Nigeria's development framework.

One of the primary obstacles is the fragmented approach to climate action across various sectors. Ministries and agencies often operate in silos, leading to inconsistencies and inefficiencies in climate-related initiatives. This fragmentation not only hinders the effectiveness of Nigeria's climate action but also limits its ability to attract and utilize climate finance. Additionally, many government institutions lack the necessary knowledge and capacity to mainstream climate change into their sectoral plans and policies.

To address these challenges, APRI – Africa Policy Research Institute, in collaboration with the African Climate Foundation (ACF), initiated the "Mainstreaming Climate into Nigeria's Development Plan" project. This project aims to bridge the gap between national climate commitments and sectoral policies by providing the Nigerian government with essential research and recommendations to integrate climate action into its national development agenda.

The project focused on seven selected ministries: the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture & Food Security, the Federal Ministry of Transport, the Federal Ministry of Budget & Economic Planning, the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs, the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, and the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade & Investment. This targeted approach served as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and action to mainstream climate into the sectoral plans and policies of various government institutions, as well as the activities of the private sector. The goal was to foster a collaborative environment where the research findings could be discussed, refined, and integrated into each ministry's strategic plans.

The Event

The convening aims to present key findings from the sectoral research briefs to government, private sector, and civil society stakeholders, while creating a platform for dialogue and peer learning on climate mainstreaming in Nigeria. It seeks to facilitate knowledge exchange, strengthen collaboration, and develop actionable pathways for implementing recommendations, with the broader goal of advancing a shared understanding of climate action as a core driver of Nigeria’s development objectives.

Against this background, the APRI-Africa Policy Research Institute, through its Just Green Technology Transition Programme, in partnership with the Strategic Youth Network for Development and the Ghana Climate and Innovation Centre, are organising a webinar to deepen practical understanding of IP issues, identify ecosystem bottlenecks and generate pragmatic policy and institutional responses that strengthen green innovation in Ghana.
