APRI - Africa Policy Research Institute

About APRI

APRI – Africa Policy Research Institute is an independent and nonpartisan African think tank with registered offices in Berlin, Germany, and Abuja, Nigeria.

It researches key policy issues affecting African countries and the African continent, and provides insights to the German and European Union policy making process on Africa. APRI also conducts research that can provide policy options to African policymakers.

As an independent think tank with strong institutional African partnerships, we link rigorous evidence-based research to policy and practice, amplify existing work and co-create new ones. As a public-facing institute, APRI offers an innovative and engaging platform where policymakers, businesses, media, civil society organisations, and research communities from Africa and Europe can engage with each other.

Our programmes are Just Green Technology Transition, Climate Transitions, Geopolitics & Geoeconomics, Economy and Society, Executive Office, Africa’s Climate Agenda, and Africa’s Digital Agenda. Under the programmes, we design research projects with our partners and collaborators.

APRI’s core products, built on these programmes, are Reports, Policy Papers, Policy Briefs, Short Analyses, Commentaries, Briefing Notes, Data Visualisations, Expert Interviews, and Podcasts.

Our Programmes

Just Green Technology Transition

This programme champions a just green technology transition for Africa, addressing the climate crisis while promoting a just economic transformation. It centres African knowledge to research and foster policy dialogue to create a unique, equitable green future.

Climate Transitions

This programme focuses on analysing the political, financial, economic, and social complexities that shape climate and energy policy. Facilitating dialogue for a low-emission, resilient future without compromising development.

Geopolitics & Geoeconomics

This programme dives deep into the complexities of a multipolar world and Africa’s positioning within it, providing evidence-based analysis and policy innovation, while offering a platform for discussions, collaboration, and broader policy and practical engagement.

Economy & Society

This programme seeks to understand what enables and enhances African agency in shaping economic and social change. We produce research, convene dialogues and exchanges that are attentive to the ways African economies, politics and societies interact.

Executive Office

The Executive Office sets APRI’s strategic direction and builds key partnerships. We also act as a lab, turning new concepts into impactful projects, and regularly share our insights through publications and The Africa Hour Podcast.

Africa Climate Agenda

Africa is in an untenable predicament: It is the continent that contributed the least to climate change yet faces the harshest of its consequences. As African countries balance efforts to address the climate crisis with goals of economic growth and job creation for the youngest populations in the world, our objective is to understand what this balance means for policymaking.

Africa Digital Agenda

We aim to generate evidence-based research that strategically positions African governments to accelerate their digital transformation. With an eye to continent-wide initiatives and the shifting global digital landscape, we seek to understand Africa’s digital agenda and provide recommendations for how partners can effectively support it.
