Clearing the Air: Advancing Methane Mitigation and Reduction in Nigeria’s Oil & Gas Sector

Join us for the Advancing Methane Mitigation and Reduction in Nigeria’s Oil & Gas Sector

 Aug 13, 2025 - 12:00 - 14:00  Physical  Abuja, Nigeria
Background

Methane is over 80 times more potent than CO₂ over a 20-year period, making it a powerful driver of global warming and a serious threat to current and future generations’ health and well-being. Cutting methane emissions from Nigeria’s oil and gas sector is therefore a critical climate strategy. In addition to reducing warming, this action can yield co-benefits for public health, food security, and economic growth, supporting Nigeria’s climate goals and advancing multiple SDGs.

Against this background, APRI - Africa Policy Research Institute, in close collaboration with the Department of Climate Change in the Federal Ministry of Environment of Nigeria, conducted the Methane Mitigation and Reduction Project (MMRP) in Nigeria’s Oil and Gas Sector. The aim of the project was to comprehensively assess and enhance methane mitigation and reduction strategies within Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

Events

To translate these findings into actionable outcomes, APRI – Africa Policy Research Institute in collaboration with Department of Climate Change in the Federal Ministry of Environment of Nigeria, is convening a two-day event to launch the MMRP Report and offer capacity-building workshops for policymakers, civil society organizations, and industry professionals to build shared knowledge, discuss the findings and co-create next steps for implementation.

The output of the convening will strengthen national efforts to reduce methane emissions by increasing awareness among key stakeholders, including policymakers, civil society organizations, and industry leaders. It will support the integration of methane reduction targets into Nigeria’s broader climate and development agenda, enhance coordination across regulatory agencies, and promote the adoption of practical technologies for emissions monitoring and mitigation. The workshops aim to equip participants with actionable knowledge, foster cross-sector collaboration, and lay the groundwork for regulatory and financing reforms.
