Green hydrogen (GH) involves using renewable electricity to extract hydrogen from water molecules via electrolysis. It is among the cleanest and most sustainable forms of energy. The International Energy Agency describes GH as “a renewable, scalable, and versatile raw material for processes such as manufacturing steel, cement, fertilizers, fuels, and other chemical products.” The development of GH is a key focus of the decarbonisation process, with notable interest, investments, and partnerships emerging in the last couple of years, including in Africa countries, such as the German-Namibian hydrogen partnership.
