Background
Africa's abundant "critical", "green", or "transition" minerals have become a focal point amid rising global demand driven by the energy transition. This has led to a surge in bi- and multilateral agreements with African states, as countries seek to secure their own supply. However, details about these agreements often remain opaque, with limited comparative analysis available. To shed light on this complex landscape, the Africa Policy Research Institute (APRI) has developed an interactive online map, which depicts the various state-to-state agreements relating to Africa’s critical mineral reserves. As part of the AMDC’s Industry Intel session, APRI will showcase the map and offer a critical analysis of what its contents say about trends in Africa's resource governance amidst the energy transition. Key questions the presentation seeks to address are:
- How do changing geopolitical dynamics influence the structure and outcomes of mineral partnerships in Africa?
- In what ways do bilateral agreements shape the collective direction and scope for collaboration among African states in managing critical mineral resources?
- What are the key challenges and opportunities in securing Africa’s critical mineral supply chains through international agreements?
